From Russia with love...
Several major contracts have been carried out by using our 3D laser scanners including the most recent HDS 3000 from Leica. This captures data even quicker and more accurately than our original Cyrax 2500.

These range from simple Building Elevations to very complicated plant/service areas. One of the most interesting projects was surveying the interior rooms including walls, floors and ceilings of the "Old" British Embassy in Moscow which is now the Ambassador's residence.

After brushing up on our Russian, ("can I have another vodka please?") we managed to complete the topographical survey and scanning within the tight programme time and to then post process the 3D imagery over the following months.

Structural Damages...
MKS has the versatility to respond to emergency situations, such as a tunnel that has collapsed onto a live, main line railway or when the Buncefield Oil Depot exploded at Christmas.

The HDS 3000 scanned the as built tunnel profile to within +/- 3mm to enable us to provide cross sections to our client very quickly.

Horses for Courses...
They do say horses for courses and this applies to our varied work on most of the 59 racecourses throughout the UK.

We have been involved in a wide variety of major projects such as Kempton Park, Ascot, Newbury, Aintree, Musselburgh in Scotland & Ballinrobe in Ireland, not only as topographical surveyors, but in providing specialist expertise in complete course and bend re-alignment.

Airship Hanger - Building Survey...
MKS recently undertook a measured building survey of hanger 1 at Cardington near Bedford. Hanger 1 is probably best known as the home of the R101 airship, which made her maiden flight on 1929 and at 777ft was the largest airship in the world. Unfortunately, it came to a tragic end a year later!

MKS was commissioned to provide floor plans, elevations and cross sections. The floor plans and elevations presented no problems to our staff, but considering the 48m height above the floor, very poor internal lighting and the obvious Health and Safety issues we decided to use our scanner to capture the roof details.

Within 4 hours we had scanned from floor level enough data to provide accurate sections through any part of the roof.

Our survey is now being used to aid a major overhaul of all elements of Hanger 1.

CLA Gamefair...
We are delighted to continue working with the CLA Gamefair in providing topographical surveys, CAD and setting out services for the annual Gamefairs.

The CLA Gamefair is the world's largest countryside fair and this year attracted over 900 exhibitors and 137,500 visitors.

We have now been involved in 8 gamefairs varying from Harewood House near Leeds, Blenheim Palace near Oxford, Belvoir Castle and now a return to an old favourite - Broadlands. Each site is approximately 400/500 acres and our plans are used by the organisers, exhibitors, police and the general public.

So, from the early sketch designs to the finite setting out on site, we are part of the team. It's the same team that returns to the previous venues to relocate the various water service routes/ducts which would have been buried and laid dormant since the previous fair.

100mm plastic piping, 800mm deep takes some finding in a 400 acre site!!

Feeling Sporty...
Just a few examples of some of our clients in the sports and leisure industry, ranging from the high octane Grand Prix circuit and Premier League Football to the more genteel pursuits of hot air ballooning or a day sipping champagne at the races.

Case Study - Stourbridge...
Earlier this year MKS carried out a major survey of 65 acres of central Stourbridge, West Midlands.

The topographical survey extended along Stourbridge Canal Arm and the River Stour and included some of Britain's oldest ironwork and glasswork sites - one of which Foster & Rastrick designed and built "The Stourbridge Lion" which, in 1829, was the first full sized rail locomotive to run on rails in America.

As part of the same commission, MKS measured 25 cross sections and 20 structural elevations along 3.5 kilometres of the River Stour. The survey was required as part of the client's Flood Risk Assessment. The location and level of all the sections were located onto OSGB36 Datums using our GPS equipment.

Our surveyors also had to compete with very dense vegetation and the slashers were in daily use cutting sight lines to obtain boundaries and along cross section lines to obtain accurate data.

3 months work completed within budget and on time.

Something Old - Something New
.........................
From Woburn Abbey to a 400 year old listed barn to your local church, or the very latest project at say Wembley or Heathrow - MKS are involved. But we still manage to retain the 'Bread and Butter' local jobs that might only take 30 minutes to survey.

Arsenal (come on you Gunners!)...

Another gem to sparkle recently was the complete topographical and building survey for Arsenal F.C. at the "old" Highbury Stadium which will be re-developed now they've moved to their new Emirates Stadium.

A combination of conventional survey methods, laser scanning and our expertise ensured the project was a winner - strange how on match days and evenings there was a sudden interest from our surveyors in carrying out fieldwork or some verification!

Building Surveys...
On the building survey side we have been extremely busy with projects varying from a deluxe hotel on the Esplanade in Jersey to a little closer to home at the huge Milton Keynes Shopping Centre. Both jobs provided a challenge to senior personnel to organise and control staff especially night time working and to keep up the high standards throughout the job.

Jersey is a lovely island for your holidays but our staff were very busy surveying in fine detail all aspects of the Grand Hotel for a refurbishment project.

The Shopping Centre covers an area of approximately 800m x 100m and includes 230 shops varying from M&S to Ann Summers. It was pleasing to hear comments from our survey teams about how accurate the columns and grids were for alignment and square because we were responsible for the setting out of them 25 years ago!!

Racecourse Development...Anyone reading the Sports Pages will
not have missed the large amount of money being poured into the Racing Industry - £200 million at Ascot and £20 million for a new All weather track at Kempton Park. An important part of our work covers not only the initial topographical survey but also a consultancy where we offer a design service including additional tracks, re-alignment, rail radii and cross falls together with the relevant setting out on site.
Racecourses need to know that horses valued at millions of pounds safely negotiate any bend and to date we have worked for 35 courses from the proverbial theatre of dreams at Cheltenham to the more rural tracks such as our local Towcester.
No doubt you'll be on a winner with MKS!
